On June 30, 2006, AICHI-KENSUI-KAI, a Japanese Group, came to LaoLao Bay Golf Resort in remembering those who died during WW2 for a Lantern Ceremony. They stayed in Saipan from June 26 to July 01, 2006 to give honor and prayers for their deceased Japanese relatives and to tie-up a stronger friendship with Northern Mariana Island Community.
As soon as they arrived in the resort, they moved ahead to East Course # 5. They started-out with a solemn prayer and from that time on, they took souvenir photo of the group.
Thereafter, they proceed to the clubhouse, on pond location, to initiate a rite that has been practiced every year, the Lantern Ceremony. It was launched in the presence of Gov. Fitial. More than 30 floating paper lanterns were set Friday night and watched them lighted.
Traditionally, the launching of lanterns is a symbolic gesture for the Japanese since setting off lanterns on a body of water is a way of sending off the souls of the dead. Those present stood by in silence as the lanterns were set off. The water reflected the dim glow of the candle as it well-lighted the lanterns.
After that time, a dinner gathering was held at the Kafe. They shared music, played the harmonica and some rendered songs on that night.
Next year`s ceremony will definitely be also a successful one!
